History

1914

The first edition of the Motogiro of Italy: it was an immediate success. The war climate favoured the desire for liberation, victory and adventure. The “legend” was created in those years and it travelled quickly beyond its borders, becoming the main motorcycle challenge on the road.

From 1953 to 1957

It was the golden period. Both the public and the press passionately followed every phase of the race. Preparations, training, schedules - all unleashed a real fanaticism that didn’t end at the finishing line. The atmosphere was exciting: the roar of the engines, the prodding of the fans, the speed of the competitors all triggered the enthusiasm of a lifetime. In 1954, 50 different brands raced 3,414 kilometres in eight legs giving life to a triumphal competition. Models such as Ducati Marianna 100 and 125 cc, Morini Settebello, Gilera, Moto Guzzi, Rumi and MV Agusta were purposely designed. The Italian myth of speed, style and performance was born. Among the pilots, Giuliano Maoggi, Emilio Mendogni, Leopoldo Tartarini and Remo Venturi crossed the finishing line as heroes. In 1957, a serious accident happened during the “Mille Miglia” (Thousand Mile) race, such that all road races were subsequently abolished. In everyone, the Motogiro of Italy left an irremediable void. No other sporting event would ever become a phenomenon of such vast proportions.

2001

In 2001 the Bologna company, Dream Engine, once again launched the Motogiro of Italy. The first historical revival took place from June 5 to June 10. This edition, sponsored by the Ducati firm, was immediately a huge success with the public at every leg of the race and registration from all over the world was completely full. A great triumph for the return of the glorious Motogiro of Italy.

From 2002 to 2004

From June 16-20, 2002, 250 fans coming from the whole world (Italy, Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa) brought to life the new edition of the Motogiro of Italy. Taking part in the three participating classes were famous names in the world of motorcycling like Damon Hill and other renowned pilots of the past.

The third edition of the 2003 revival saw a completely new itinerary that highlighted the regions of the North and included mountain runs through breathtaking panoramas and the thrilling roads of the Dolomite peaks. The 2003 Motogiro was again sponsored by Ducati Motor. In this third edition 350 pilots were registered. In 2004 the Motogiro disembarked in Sicily and participants were offered an overwhelming itinerary on the Sicilian coasts.

From 2005 to 2007

May 2005: the Motogiro returned to central Italy, on the most classical roads of its history, during the last week of May. Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Umbria and Marche were the theatre of a new trip between the past and present. For the fifth consecutive year Ducati Motor was the main sponsor of the event. The 2006 Motogiro of Italy started again from Romagna and its route extended all the way to Marche and Abruzzo. A great return to the Sicilian roads for the 2007 edition; once more an enchanting run that allowed the pilots to cross the famous Valley of the Temples. The Motogiro of Italy trip this year excited an even larger public, thanks to the participation of the journalists Emerson Gattafoni and Valeria Cagnoni, sportscasters of “Dreams Road”, on October 27 on RAI 1; in fact the first episode of the RAI program was entirely devoted to the Motogiro in Sicily.

2008

Make history with us for the eighth edition of the Motogiro of Italy which will take place from the 19th to the 24th of May 2008.
